An allergy is a reaction of your immune system to something that does not bother most other people. People with allergies are usually sensitive to more than one thing. The substances that usually cause reactions are: Pollen Dust mites Mold spores Animal dander Foods Insect bites Medicines Normally, your immune system fights germs. It is the defense system of your body. However, in most allergic reactions it responds to a false alarm. Genes and the environment probably play a role in allergies. Allergies can cause a number of symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, rashes, edema (swelling), or asthma. Allergies range from mild to severe. A severe reaction called anaphylaxis can be fatal. Doctors use skin and blood tests to diagnose allergies. Treatments include medicines, injections and avoiding substances that cause allergies.
